Congress persistent to proceed

The relation between Congress, the chief constituent party of the present UPA government and its Left allies is in a stalemate. Though this is not a new aspect and in the relationship of these years this has occurred at several times, but never in this way. The main bone of contention is the Indo-US civilian nuclear agreement and the intention of the government to the IAEA board to seek its approval for the India-specific safeguards agreement. However, the Left brigade is still obstinate to prevent this tooth and nail as ever before. But this time the mood of the Congress-led government has changed a lot, no longer in any form of conciliation.

It seems that the government has suddenly woken up from the slumber and is gleeful to find the hesitant mood of Lefts. This has come to the fore from the way in which the government has rejected Left demand to see a copy of the safeguards agreement negotiated with the IAEA. Its perfervid attitude and the way it stated that it had been done by a sovereign government and therefore a sealed and secret issue, left many confused who had no other way except to mull over the intentions of the Congress. Whether it was slowly moving towards the dissolution of the government and subsequently to the ensuing Parliament election kept even the politician pundits in a confusing state.

But it seems that government is not going to bother over the future of the government since it is adamant to select the deal from the controversy of deal or power. The emboldened spirit of the party is due to the fact the extensive and resurgent middle class constituency, especially the urban sector, in India is pro-deal. If the Congress can show its courage, it can definitely gain in the coming election. Furthermore, it must do everything before the current director-general, Mohamed ElBaradei, demits office in July-end. The successor may not be supportive of the Indian cause like him.
